How to proceed ? some tricks
1. Read the text carefully
2. Make a text map
Reread the text with a pencil,
-Highlight main parts, connections between parts, main arguments.
– Remove example
3. Write a summary.
-Give the abstract a title.
-hen divide the text into paragraphs, starting with the introduction.
-The introduction gives the author’s paper (his main idea).
-Each paragraph corresponds to one main argument of the original text.
-We have to find the logical sequence between arguments.
-The abstract must be faithful to the text while being clear and concise.
-Don’t forget to count the words!
4. Type the summary on your computer. Then re-read, and check the following:
– No spelling or grammar mistakes
-No citations and no paraphrases
-The abstract does not provide personal thoughts that are not in the original text
-All the big ideas and arguments of the original text are in the abstract
-The abstract follows the instructions (number of characters, font, etc.)
Why summarize a text
For practical reasons of efficiency, saving time and resources, but also to improve understanding and retention of information, as summarized texts are better retained in memory. Summary exercises improve reading (analytical work) and writing (synthetic work) skills.
The purpose of school summarization exercises is usually to ensure that some important text is well understood, considering that with a good understanding the student or students will be better able to retain main points, personal opinions, engage in debates or feed them. Thinking, in addition, develops their ability to write precise and concise text.
Major mistakes to avoid
The following errors should be avoided:
– comment on, criticize or judge the views of the author;
– Stand outside the text by using expressions such as “The author believes…”:
The abstract is the text that shrinks by itself;
– Reproduce large numbers of sentences or long snippets of sentences from text
leave (although a particularly important phrase may be quoted
quotation marks);
– correctly write sentences or sets of sentences, but not link them;
– in telegram style;
-Using multiple languages or styles that are inappropriate for the type of source text
and the purpose of the abstract.
In conclusion
Making good summaries is a skill, like everyone else. Skill, acquired through thoughtful practice: the former cannot be perfect. These different readings are not a luxury we can do, this is their quality.
Their number depends largely on the quality of the abstract, but also on a complete plan (matching text to tasks, writing intent, recipient…) and gender.
