Where is This Year’s Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago?
Trinidad and Tobago is a country made up of two different islands. It is in the southern Caribbean, close to Venezuela. Its capital, Port of Spain, is the epicenter of all the carnival action. Many improvements have been made to Port of Spain to attract tourists and propel the nation into the developed category.
How long has the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival been around?
The French colonizers of the 18th century laid the groundwork for modern-day Trinidad and Tobago. French customs and language were introduced to the island, and among them were extravagant fetes, private celebrations, and masquerade balls.
As a result, enslaved Africans organized their own gatherings, known as can Boulay, which they were not allowed to join. The ‘Mas’ originated as a kind of satire at can Boulay festivals when slaves poke fun at their owners’ actions and clothing.
Regarding the evolution of Trinidad and Tobago music, Can Boulay is crucial. African slaves not only used calypso to taunt their slave owners but also to communicate with one another.
As a result of the Can Boulay Riots in 1881, African percussion music was outlawed, leading to steelpan’s development. They used cooking pots, trash can lids, and oil barrels instead of traditional percussion instruments. Today, these steel pan ensembles remain an integral element of Trinidad’s musical landscape.
Port of Spain, and other adjacent towns host the most significant and extraordinary carnival festivities. Chaguanas, Mayaro, Tobago, Arima, and San Fernando are also home to smaller ones.
