What is Screen Printing?
It is a method of printing designs or graphics on t-shirts using screen printing, also known as silk screening. In screen printing, thick inks are applied on top of the shirt rather than being absorbed by it. Screen printing is typically done on paper or fabric, but with some specialized inks, it is also possible to print on metal, plastic, glass, and even wood.
How Does a Screen Printing Machine Work?
Screen printing involves creating a stencil on a mesh screen, then pushing the paint or ink through the screen to create an impression on the shirt.

For each color that needs to be printed, one screen is generally used. To ensure that all colors line up correctly, the screens need to be registered before printing. Printing begins by pushing one color of ink through the screen at a time. A large dryer cures all the ink on each piece once it is completed.
How to Screen Print T-Shirts at Home
There is a misconception that screen printing requires expensive materials and is difficult to do as a DIY project. In reality, it’s not as complicated as you might think.
Supplies Needed
- Piece of glass
- Squeegees
- Dark Room
- Photo Emulsion and Sensitizer
- Gloves
- A 150-watt bulb
- T-shirts
- Cardboard to fit inside the shirt
- Design Software
- Silk Screen Fabric Ink
- A screen and a frame, which can be purchased from a local art store
The Process
The first step is to choose an image. Designing your shirt with quality software will make it easier to create the idea, slogan, or picture you’re looking for.
On a regular piece of paper, print the image, shape, or letters. Carefully cut them out.
Apply Photo Emulsion to your completed frame. It’s best to do this part in a dark room, as the material reacts to light. You must follow the instructions on the bottle when applying this photo emulsion with a squeegee.
It is now time to transfer your image to the screen and place a clean glass over it to hold it in place. To expose your image, you will need a 150-watt light bulb. Depending on the size of your screen, your photo emulsion instructions will tell you how long this exposure will last. The distance between the light source and the screen is also indicated.
After the time has elapsed, remove the cutout from the glass. An image of the picture will be visible.
Using a garden hose or a shower head, use high-pressure lukewarm water to clean the screen. Ensure that you are focusing on the image area. Once the image is more vibrant, the remainder of the emulsion will wash away.
- Put your tee-shirt on and make sure it’s smooth.
- Assemble a silkscreen by placing the recessed side up over the shirt.
- Paint your screen from top to bottom.
- You should not apply any pressure to the paint as you drag it over the image using a squeegee.
- Carefully remove the screen from the shirt by lifting it slowly.
- Wash the screen right away with cool water after hanging the shirt to dry.
- To ensure the image sets, place a dry iron on the shirt when you feel the ink is dry.
